Your Guide to Freedom from the Agonizing Urge to Splurge
Did you eat one or three or more? How many of you asked yourself if you were hungry? If not, maybe sugar is a problem in your life.
How about eating something you wish you hadn’t and feeling like a loser afterward—Are sweets, carbohydrates or alcohol your go-to stress relievers? If so, you may be addicted to sugar and that is why I wrote this book.
So many of us struggle with these agonizing, uncontrollable cravings and commit to one diet after another!
But if we don’t throw everything we’ve got at this emotional, physical, social, and even spiritual issue, we will continue to stay stuck on the relentless merry-go-round of sugar cravings.
Weaving stories and practical tips, tools and resources into this little book will help you find freedom from the urge to splurge (unless you have a special occasion and deliberately make that choice).
So, if you are sick and tired of the mood swings, irritability, skin or other chronic health problems, and lack of energy, this book gives you everything you need to get you on the path to a freedom you may never have experienced before.
Cravings—we’ve all had them! They range from a desire for a piece of chocolate to compulsively downing a carton of ice cream.
One nearly universal trigger of cravings is stress. We want to ease those anxious feelings with chips, sugar, shopping, carbohydrates, chocolate, alcohol—whatever is particularly soothing to us.
My goal in Cravings! Your Guide to Freedom From the Agonizing Urge to Splurge is to help you understand why you get uncontrollable cravings and how to ease their grip through greater self-knowledge, better nutrition, better digestion, helpful healing techniques and deeper self care, leading to better moods.
You will get the right steps in the right order to help you heal and gain back control. Don’t feel you have to do everything at once though, or you will get stressed and want to revert to old behaviors. Take what works for you and practice adding that into your life. Then take another step. Before you know it, you’ll be sailing into a cravings-free lifestyle!
A client, Sarah, used to tell me she would eat an entire cake when she was overwhelmed by some difficult family problems. When she came to me, she reported it was almost like she went into a trance while she ate. Her behavior was always followed by guilt and remorse.
Together we gradually eliminated the sugar, while adding in fresh fruits and vegetables. We talked about other ways Sarah could de-stress and care for herself before she felt desperate enough to buy a cake.
After about five months, she dropped the extra weight and went down a couple of dress sizes. This was just in time for her high school reunion. She was thrilled that she had met her goal and told me everybody commented on how great she looked that night!
Cravings come in a variety of flavors, so if sugar isn’t your thing, keep your substance of choice in mind. If you routinely crave the same thing or a certain feeling always triggers the desire to escape, it’s a signal (think flashing yellow light) that there’s something more going on.
Sharing my own motivations, some physical chemistry and pathways to change will help you gain some insight into what’s going on for you.
“Finally, a research-based explanation of why we have physical and emotional cravings and what we can do about them. Clearly and logically presented, this ebook is written for the layperson with the passion and compelling backstory of the author’s own experience with successfully overcoming cravings.
The author approached me about helping her edit this book because of my background in biology and freelance writing. I thought I already knew the basics of nutrition, but I came away with several important pieces of information and insights about the powerful connection between what we feed ourselves and how it impacts the way we feel in every way—from aches and pains to emotions to psychological impulses.
If you know you’re not feeling your best—if you’re overweight or numbing yourself with too many sweets, too much alcohol, too many cigarettes, or any other compulsive behavior (gambling, shopping, etc.)—you must educate yourself with the information in this book and don’t be surprised if what you learn can turn your life around for the better.” ~Elizabeth Cottrell
Helping women to thrive and live life to its fullest eventually became my passion and my career.
Whatever level you’re struggling on, my own experience, research, and coaching have brought me the personal stories and practical tools to help you regain your zest for living, finally free of the painful cycle that creates such physical and mental anguish.
The main problem with addictive behaviors is when you’re in their grip, you can’t imagine life without the substance, food or crutch, yet it is exactly this crutch that is keeping you in pain. I think cravings start from a wounded place too.
When we experience cravings, we want something—love, comfort, attention, affection—and we are unable to get it. We reach for a substitute and find it eases those painful feelings of lack and emptiness. We soon learn to reach only for the substitute. It’s safer and always provides satisfaction, or so we think…
You have experienced the pain that comes from using unhealthy behaviors to meet a need. I have often said, “The craving is not the problem. It’s the solution.” If you’re ready to delve into what’s driving those crazy uncontrollable urges and break free of the bondage of splurging, feeling guilt and remorse, being heavier than you’d like and feeling sluggish, irritable, moody or achy, read Cravings!
